Johnston Township is a small rural community that is 5 square miles with a population of about 2,000 residents. Our Station number is 29, dispatch frequency is 154.250 MHz with a working frequency of 151.500 MHz. Membership consists of approximately 35 active members.
Besides our own township, the Fire Department proudly provides Auto aid fire protection service to Gustavus, Kinsman and Vernon Townships. The EMS service and paramedic backup total coverage area is approximately 125 square miles which is the largest coverage area in Trumbull County by a single department. The area consists mostly of rural farmland, as well as residential and light industry. The fire department provides fire protection to 2 schools. Funding comes from township fire and ems levies, ambulance billing and paramedic assist billing. The township of Vernon also pays a yearly fee to have the ambulance service respond to their areas during their short staffing periods. The fire department also receives money from fund raising from the township fire association.
The Johnston Township Fire Department has a long, rich history and tradition dating back to 1954 when the department was chartered, and takes the up most pride in the department’s members, their training and qualifications, as well as the apparatus we house. The department currently has 1-Engine, 1-Tanker, 1-Heavy Rescue, 1-Brush Unit, 3-Squads, and 1-Medic Response Vehicle.
